WHAT HAS CHANGED IN THE WORLD SINCE 1956?

In 1956, the following events of note happened:

The Suez Crisis, which was the start of the end of the British Empire, took place.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) organised its first march at Aldermaston.
Prince Rainier of Monaco married Grace Kelly.
The Cuban revolution, led by Fidel Castro, started.
Warsaw Pact troops, under orders from the Soviet Union, invaded Hungary.
Elvis Presley had his first hit song with Heartbreak Hotel.
Nottingham Panthers won the UK’s ice hockey league.

Since 1956, and 57 years later in 2013, this is what happened to the class of 1956:

The British Empire is effectively dead.
CND, though still going, is dying.
Grace Kelly died in a car accident
Fidel Castro is dead.
The Soviet Union is dead.
Elvis Presley is dead.
Nottingham Panthers win the UK’s ice hockey league, the first time since 1956.

We went to Belfast for the weekend to witness our ice hockey team, the GMB Nottingham Panthers, winning the league by beating the Belfast Giants on Friday. We flew back to Nottingham with the players and the cup. The players smelled of alcohol!

St Patrick’s Day came early for the Panthers!

We hope you also had a great weekend.

Why does Guinness taste different in Ireland?

Um, I'm pretty sure Fidel Castro is still alive.

Does it taste better in Ireland? It really is one of the best beers I've ever had.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

My apologies, Castro is alive. I got too carried away with Panthers winning!

I'm sorry too. I don't usually call other bloggers out on the errors I see in their posts. ( I've gotten carried away too.) But that one struck a chord with me, because of some old debates I had with my mom about school districts setting rules for 'English Only' classes in Florida, decades ago. (It involved immigrants, and my Grandfather was a Spanish speaking immigrant. Long story. )

Anyway, I've been pretending (for the last few hours) that the swill from Milwaukee that I've been drinking is actually Guinness from Ireland. lol

Thanks. The Panthers still have three more cups to go for, as do the Belfast Giants! x

Guinness tastes tinny in Britain, so I don't drink it. But in Ireland, it's what I drink.
