FARTING, THE FACTS

Experts have recently recommended that, when flying, people are best letting a fart out than trying to keep it in. “People fart more on airplanes”, says Professor Rosenburg, “because of changes in the intestinal gases as cabin pressure alters”.

A team of Danish and British gastroenterologists published a paper on flatulence on airplanes in the New Zealand Medical Journal. People fart about ten times a day because of digestion, but this research team found that people fart far more when flying. They argued that, though the holding back option may seem "alluring" on a plane, there are drawbacks to this option, including increased stress, discomfort, pain, bloating, dyspepsia and other symptoms.

"There is actually only one reasonable solution ... just let it go,'' the research team advise passengers. The researcher also suggest that airlines should consider putting charcoal in passenger seats and that airline passengers should wear “charcoal-lined underwear” so that they “may develop the ability to ‘sneak a fart’” to experience “a comfortable flight in harmony with fellow passengers''.

Though better out than in, the researchers do not recommend passengers lighting their farts even though this is an effective method of reducing odour. The research team confirmed that exercising the pelvic ring is essential to fart silently and that women’s farts smell more than men’s farts.

The researchers were particularly concerned about the dangers of farting in the plane’s cockpit. "If the pilot restrains a fart, all the drawbacks previously mentioned, including diminished concentration, may affect his abilities to control the airplane,'' they wrote. "If he lets go of the fart his co-pilot may be affected by its odour, which again reduces safety on board the flight'', they warned.

Should the pilot fart or not fart in the cockpit?
Are you an average ten times a day farter? Or are you below or above average farter?
Are you a ‘let-it-out’ or ‘keep-it-in’ person when it comes to farting if in company?
Do women’s farts smell more than men’s farts?

I don’t fart!

What a topic!!
I can't go in the cockpit, so who cares!

I very discreetly let it out in company.
I have no idea who smells more but the cat can be rank at times (female)

Yes, you do fart. Everyone farts!!

"Don't hold your farts in. They will travel up your spine to your brain. That's where shitty ideas come from"

Dogs' farts can be bad as well. I used to be a farmer's son and I can vouch for the farting skills of cows.

I've been told that my farts are rose-scented!
