NEW POPE'S MESSAGE TO AFF

White smoke was seen spewing from the Sistine Chapel Chapel’s chimney on Wednesday, 13 March 2013. The white smoke – fumata bianca – signifies to the world that the papal conclave had elected the new pope. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, will be called Pope Francis I.

Pope Francis was elected after five ballots by the Roman Catholic Church’s College of Cardinals in a highly secretive conclave. Prior to the fifth ballot, black smoke – fumata nera – was seen billowing from the Chapel’s chimney, which signifies that a papal election was not decisive. The ballot papers cast by the cardinals in the papal election are burnt in the chimney fire.

For the 2005 papal conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI, observers complained that the black and white smoke appeared as grey smoke, causing some confusion. For this year’s conclave, the smoke was both blacker and whiter; observers easily distinguished the colour of the smoke.

A Vatican spokesman admitted that the fumata nera and fumata bianca were made in a new way. The black smoke, seen when a pope had not been elected, was made by adding potassium perchlorate, anthracene and sulfur to the burned ballot papers. And the white smoke, seen when a pope has been elected, was made by adding potassium chlorate, lactose and pine resin to the burned papers.

By smoke signals, the Vatican clearly communicated to the watching world what was happening in the papal conclave.

In Latin, Pope Francis announced to the adoring crown in St Peter’s Square that he is willing to share the Vatican’s smoke technology so that Affairlook can communicate more clearly to its frustrated members. The Pope also offered the services of the Swiss Guards to preside over site security for Affairlook.

How is it that the Vatican can communicate more effectively than Affairlook?
Why do the Swiss Guards guard the Pope?

Pope Francis seemed very fazed when he was introduced to the crowd. I think Freddie Mercury would have made a fantastic Pope.

Who do think would be, or would have been, a good Pope?

I think Silvio Berlusconi should have been considered as the next Pope. He would have resurrected some fine papal traditions with his bunga bunga parties!
