INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Today is International Women’s Day.

“I don’t think there will be a woman Prime Minister in my lifetime”, so said Margaret Thatcher in an interview in 1973. In 1979 she became the British Prime Minister.

The first International Women’s Day was held on 19 March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On this day, more than one million women and men attended rallies campaigning for women's rights. This day increasingly became marked in other countries around the world. The United Nations declared 1975 to be International Women’s Year.

International Women’s Day is now held on 8 March each year.

Have you ever attended an International Women’s Day event or rally?

Margaret Thatcher remarked, “If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.”

What did Margaret Thatcher do for women?

Just think what the BBC will do when she dies; it'll be time to go abroad for a few days!

She certainly broke the glass ceiling for herself and did very little, if not nothing, for women generally. x
