EXTREME SUNBATHING


Ashley Gilbertson took this photograph in Karbala, Iraq on 5 March 2004. It is a photograph of Polish soldiers sunbathing with an American Blackhawk helicopter hovering ahead during the Iraq war. Do you think the helicopter was on a security mission or on a voyeur’s ride?

Do you like sunbathing?
If so, do you sunbathe naked?

Though not keen on sunbathing, I used to work for a company that made helicopters. I even signed the Official Secrets Act! The job was very frustrating as I never felt I made a difference.

For a time, I worked in the Orwellian Product Services Department that involved inputting masses of technical data into computers. I never knew what the data was used for or even whether it was used at all.

One day I decided to stop inputting the data to see whether anyone noticed. They didn’t! I realised then that I had a non-job. I spent the rest of my time at the company wandering around to watch helicopters get made.

Have you ever had a non-job, a job that served no purpose but still paid?

You're not missing much. My most boring holidays have been spent with people sunbathing on the beach! x
