AN ENGLISH RIDING COAT

Above is a photo of the Obelisco de Buenos Aires covered with a giant pink condom to commemorate the World AIDS Day on 1 December 2005.

Giacomo Casanova was an eighteenth century Italian adventurer, who became most famous for his legendary womanising. For Casanova, a condom was his English riding coat.

For me, when younger, condoms were rubber johnnies, or rubbers and johnnies for short. When a bit older, a condom was a Durex; but now I say condom.

What did you call a condom?
What do you call a condom now?
What other names of a condom do you know of?

In 1979, the post-punk band, Gang of Four, released a single called At Home He’s a Tourist. The song included the following lyrics:

At home he feels like a tourist
At home he feels like a tourist
He fills his head with culture
He gives himself an ulcer
He fills his head with culture
He gives himself an ulcer

Down on the disco floor
They make their profit
From the things they sell
To help you cover
all the rubbers you hide
In your top left pocket

At home she's looking for interest
At home she's looking for interest
She said she was ambitious
So she accepts the process
She said she was ambitious
So she accepts the process

The single charted and the BBC’s Top of the Pops television chart show programme wanted Gang of Four to perform the song on its weekly show, provided the band changed the words of the song’s lyrics. The BBC objected to the word “rubbers” being aired on Top of the Pops.

Gang of Four refused to change the lyrics of their song and the BBC refused to allow the band to perform on its Top of the Pops show.

Why is a condom called a condom?

Was there a Mr or Mrs Condom, a Dr Condom or even a Professor Condom!?

cock sock was a favorite when I was younger!
Now it's just a condom or a rubber!

I remember calling them rubbers, but now (to me) those mean rubber boots to protect your shoes from puddles.

"Protection" is another thing they've been called in my circles.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I don't know why Casanova nicknamed a condom as an English riding coat. Why English!? x

Cock sock, that's more accurate than most names for a condom!

I've not come across protection; it conjures up all sorts of images but presumably it was protection against pregnancy.

Your cumdum lead sounds very promising. By adding a 'p' at the end of the word, it's a very accurate term.

My parents called them French letters as well. I've not heard of frangers though. x
