WINDOW PEEPING
WINDOW PEEPING I love a good peep! The large windows into our apartment have no curtains and we probably get peeped a lot. Amsterdam is a window peeper's paradise, and I don't mean the windows in the red light district. Amsterdam's houses have very large windows and front onto a pavement! Do you like looking through windows into other people’s homes? Have you seen anyone have sex through a window? Are you a window peep? Can anyone look through your windows? Do you curtain your windows? Do you have net curtains? In the 18th and 19th centuries, window taxes were introduced in England, Scotland, Wales, France and Spain. In England and Wales, an Act was passed in 1696 introducing the window tax as a way of paying for the Napoleonic Wars. The more windows a property had the more tax the property-owner paid. This property tax was seen as fairer than an income tax, which was first introduced in 1842. As a way of avoiding this tax, many buildings of this period had bricked-up window spaces. The window tax was abolished in 1851. The term ‘daylight robbery’ may have originated from the window tax as the unpopular tax was widely seen as a tax on ‘light’. |
