THE NHL LOCKOUT

THE NHL LOCKOUT

So the NHL lockout has ended ... until the next one!

Since moving to Nottingham a few years ago, I have become a massive ice hockey fan. In the UK, it is ice hockey; in America, it is hockey. In the UK, hockey means field hockey.

My team, Nottingham Panthers, are the oldest ice hockey team in England and the best supported in the UK, but we are the team that everyone else hates! We are sponsored by a trade union, the GMB, which I take pleasure from - better to be on the side of taxpaying organised labour than non-taxpaying big business!

With the NHL lockout, a handful of top players came over to the UK to play ice hockey. The Nottingham Panthers picked up Anthony Stewart, a fourth-liner from Carolina Hurricanes. He was okay, but nothing special. In the previous NHL lockout of 2004/2005, we picked up three NHL players, one of whom, Nick Boynton, was the best player I've ever seen. He went on to play for the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup-winning team.

The UK's Elite Ice Hockey League has ten teams, mainly from the North. At its best, the standard of ice hockey in the UK is about AHL-standard. It's the top league in the country, because teams are allowed the most imports. The import players, mainly American, are better but they often need time to settle as rinks here are bigger here than in America.

The Nottingham Panthers have never won the league since 1956! We are top now and playing well. Maybe this will be the year. We have just re-signed David Alexandre Beauregard - see photo above. He is the most consistent player I've seen - 40 goals a season plus much more. He only has one eye after an ice hockey accident. He scored the winning goal for the Panthers in the last two play-off finals.

I know sport is not everyone's cup of tea. But if you do like sport and you like sport that's skilful, fast and tough, ice hockey is the sport for you!

Are you an ice hockey fan or, if not from the UK, a hockey fan?
As I don't have an NHL team to support, what team should I follow?
If not an ice hockey fan, what is your sport?

Let's go Panthers!

There are two professional leagues in the UK. Nottingham Panthers play in the Elite Ice Hockey League that is of a better standard, because each team are allowed to have up to ten imports on their roster.

In the 1936 Winter Olympics, Britain won the gold medal in ice hockey!

Trade unions are cool. At my workplace, only two out of about 15 administrative staff are in the trade union. Most staff do not see the point of trade unions, another legacy of Thatcher!

I've only seen one baseball game; I didn't understand the rules!
