AMSTERDAM

We're back from Amsterdam. Amsterdam is pleasure city - above is the red light district nestled within bars, restaurants, canals and beautiful merchant houses.

It is illegal to smoke a cigarette inside a bar but legal to smoke a cigarette outside. Yet it is legal to smoke a spliff inside a coffee shop but illegal outside! There is currently a battle over buying cannabis and smoking spliffs in Amsterdam coffee shops. At present, it is decriminalised but there are legal moves afoot to prevent non-Dutch people buying and smoking in coffee shops.

Amsterdam is a very compact city, easy to walk around (about 30 minutes from one end to the other end of the city centre) and with an excellent tram system. The key to finding your way around Amsterdam are the canals. Below is a quick guide to the city representing more-or-less a straight walk from the North to the South of the city centre:

NORTH SEA/AMSTERDAM HARBOUR
Centraal train station – regular trains to Schiphol airport
Damrak – canal trips; red light district; shops (especially around Nieuwendijk); sex shops (especially around Warmoesstraat, plus Female & Partners on Spuistraat 100); sex shows; bars; restaurants; and coffee shops
Dam Square – Royal Palace; street entertainment; bars; restaurants; and a few coffee shops
Kalverstraat – shops galore; Cafe Hoppe (the oldest bar in Amsterdam); and Begijnhof (a quiet sanctuary in the middle of the city)
SINGEL canal - flower market
HERENGRACHT canal
Leidsestraat – shops
KEIZERSGRACHT canal
PRINSENGRACHT canal
Leidseplein and beyond – bars; restaurants; coffee shops; street entertainment; canal trips; museums and art galleries (eg van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk); Vondelpark (where couples often have sex in this park near the playground in the evening!)

A fantastic hotel in Amsterdam is the Art Deco-style Rho Hotel, just off the Dam Square.

Amsterdam, along with Barcelona and New York, is one of our favourite cities.

Have you been to Amsterdam?
If so, what naughtiness did you get up to?
What is your favourite city?

Yes I am been to Amsterdam. It took me more me more then 30 minutes to walk it. I got lost and ended up it in the heroin shooting up area.

I could not even walk down the side walk. They would not move. I ended up walking down the middle of the street to get out of there. Much like Kingston Jamaica. ( same thing)

I found a British bar and went it to calm my nerves.

The bartender told me you stay away from there. You are lucky you did not get robbed or worst.

On my way back to the hotel. Still lost. These two young girls asked me where are you going?? I told them where. Then they said we can show you where it is. Do you mind if we practise our English on you?

They sounded like they spoke perfect English to me.

Then they said have you been to Ann Franks place yet? I said no. They said you have to see it. So they took me there.

Man they were nice to me. They say it because the Canadians liberated them in second world war.

It is a great place. I liked Hamburg Germany too.

As for a favorite city I liked Munich during October fest

This is not meant to offend any one in any way.

That's quite a story of extremes in a short space of time. Was it around Centraal Station where you bumped into heroin. We were offered lots of drugs (coke not heroin) while we walked there!

I got too stoned. At a coffee shop, I thought I'd avoid the home-grown skunk and tried something called Super Haze. After ten minutes I had to struggle back to the hotel! I guess I should stick to cake.
