In October this year, a 20-year old Brazilian woman, Catarina Migliorina, auctioned off her virginity for a charitable cause on the Virgins Wanted website. She sold her first sexual encounter to a Japanese man for $780,000, with rival bids from an Indian and two American men.

The student denied on the grounds that she sold her body only once. She also planned to use the auction monies to building homes for poor families in Brazil. She also agreed to film the encounter for an Australian documentary. She said: “The auction is just a business, I’m a romantic girl at heart and believe in love. But this will make a big difference to my area”.

The Virgins Wanted website stated: “The female virgin will undergo a medical examination by an accredited gynecologist and provide the winning bidder with medical evidence of her virginity. The virgin must provide a document from the gynecologist that certifies her claim to virginity.” The highest bidder will be refrained from ‘kissing the virgin’, but will receive a ‘certificate of consummation’ after the experience.

I lost my virginity at the quite late age of 18. It was an ordeal because it followed a couple of failed attempts. Also, the mother of my then girlfriend walked in, requiring me to quickly jump off and hide behind the bed. Fortunately, her mother was drunk so my girlfriend could persuade her that she was imagining things. When I got back home, I stripped off naked to look at my no longer chaste body. I felt more normal; a rite of passage had been marked! I also felt like that when I went to my first football match without an accompanying adult!

It has been estimated in a large US study that 5 per cent of men and 2 per cent of women are involuntarily celibate - that's a lot of virgins not by choice!
