CARNIVAL Carnivals are sexy! Carnival is a festival, which occurs immediately before Lent usually during February. [image] The origin of the term, carnival, is disputed. Some argue that the carnival is derived the Italian word, carne (meat); the name comes from the Italian carne levare, meaning ‘to remove meat’, since meat is prohibited during Lent. Others argue that carnival stemmed the word, carrus, suggesting a pre-Christian festival.

[image] Carnival is very much part of Brazilian culture. Brazilians call their carnivals the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’. The first Brazilian carnival took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1641. Still, Rio de Janeiro carnival is considered worldwide, as the capital of the Brazilian carnival. Roll on the 2016 Rio Olympics!

[image] The largest Carnival in Britain is the Notting Hill Carnival. The Notting Hill Carnival started in 1965 and takes place in the West London over three days in late August. It is one of the largest street festivals in the world.

[image] In England, the season immediately before Lent was called Shrovetide. It was a time for shriving where people would confess their sins. Nowadays, Shrove Tuesday is celebrated as Pancake Day. We had pancakes; the rest of the world had carnival!

[image] Carnival in the USA is best known as Mardi Gras. New Orleans is the capital of Mardi Gras. To New Orleanais, Mardi Gras refers to the Tuesday before lent, sometimes known as Fat Tuesday.

[image] The celebration of Mardi Gras was brought to Louisiana by early French settlers. The first recorded Mardi Gras was held in Louisiana was at the mouth of the Mississippi River on 3 March, 1699.

[image] Carnival is also celebrated in Brooklyn, New York, but is not staged before Lent, but is part of Labour Day (or is it Labor Day?) in September.
