PUSSY RIOT, A COCK AND AN ORGY

Two members of the Russian feminist punk band, Pussy Riot, are serving a prison sentence after a court recently found them guilty of hooliganism motivated by racial hatred for playing an anti-Putin song in a Moscow cathedral.

Maria Alyokuina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who both have young , have been sent to serve their prison sentences in separate labour camps in the freezing Arctic and Siberia.

Pussy Riot are highly critical and vocal about the repressive nature of many reforms introduced since the election of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Pussy Riot's most celebrated art performance involved a drawing a giant phallus on a drawbridge across from the Russian Federal Security Service’s headquarters in St Petersburg. Below is a photo of the drawbridge raised!

One Pussy Riot member, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has a long history of political activism, often in concert with her husband, Pyotr Verzilov. They, as members of the radical art collective Voina, shot to underground fame in 2008 after being photographed taking part in an orgy in Moscow's biological museum to protest against the election of Dmitry Medvedev, the man Putin hand-picked to take his place in the Kremlin. Inside is a photo of the orgy.

What is your view on the Pussy Riot case?
Has anyone heard their music?

Here's Voina's slightly contrived museum orgy:

I haven't heard their music, but I have heard about this case. (I may have even seen a video of their arrest on stage!) Terrible.

This is why those of us who have it, shouldn't take our "Freedom Of Speech" for granted.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

We too have not heard any of Pussy Riot's songs. In our jobs, we come across a lot of international students from less-than-democratic countries, eg China, Kazakhstan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Syria. These students are amazed that, in the UK and other democratic countries, they can say and write more or less what they want without fear of being reported, interviewed, interrogated, arrested, imprisoned, tortured, etc.
Their amazement is a wake-up call to appreciate what we have, though far from perfect.

You are dead right, but this is Russia we are talking about. Russia has an ex-Comuumunist Party President siding with the establishment Orthodox Russian church over Pussy Riot.
1070s punk music, challenging the establishemnt, is just what Russia needs now.

It is awful, but they shouldn't be imprisoned for it.
