Grillz – what is it about them?



Grillz (or grills) are metal fronts for teeth, often made from gold, platinum and silver; they are sometimes encrusted with gems, especially diamonds.

Grillz became popular from the early 1980s with the rise of hip hop culture. Grillz is a 2005 song by the American rapper, Nelly. They are increasingly celebrity mainstream.

According to kingice, an online hip hop bling retailer, “Jewelry in your mouth guarantees attention whenever you smile or speak. The Ladies love staring at a guy with a sparkling grill”.

It is thought that grillz originated amongst Mayans in central America; many rich Mayans drilled pieces of jade into their teeth.
In 2006, the American Dental Association found there is no evidence that the long-term wearing of grillz is safe.
