Updated Message Center Filtering

We will be updating the message center filters today for 10% of Affairlook users.

This update offers members more customization when organizing their conversations with others.

Some differences you will see:

*Display conversations based on your own preference
*Search the full text of messages to quickly locate conversations
*Search the full text of your messages to quickly locate your favorite conversations
*Create customized labels by selecting a conversation and clicking on the 'Label as' button
*Use the Select button for mass actions like deleting or sending the same reply to several messages

How to customize what you see in your Message Center:

The Show menu allows you to choose the conversations you want to view every time you come to Message Center. You can choose a different option and it will be saved as your new default. The numbers in parentheses indicate the count of unread messages you have in each option:

Active Conversations – Messages you have received from other members or messages you have received a reply on. This is the default setting. Under Active Conversations, you can further filter the list by ‘Important’ or ‘Others’.

Important – Members that are your Cupid Matches, Friends, in your Hotlist, or VIP members
Others – Members that are not in the above 4 categories

Pending Conversations – Members who have not replied to your message yet

Personal Labels – These are the customized labels you can create and add any messages you receive

With each Show option, you can further sort the list by using the Type dropdown:

Unread – Conversations with any messages that you have not read
Read – Conversations with all messages that you have read
Replied – Conversations in which you are the last person to reply
Unreplied – Conversations with messages that you have not replied to yet

Your feedback is important, so feel free to share what you think of the revised MC filtering system.

This change is just too complicated!
Where do you get your ideas from? Can't mail be mail?

Can I auto-block all the messages from fakes pushing the Adulife.com website?

I thought that the site would do it for me but for some reason you tolerate this latest batch of (gold member) fakes...

community replies on 3/27/2013 3:14 pm:
Hi FullOn4U,

Let me explain something that has changed since we switched message center systems. Communication in the new MC is not heavily monitored. Meaning, we don't mark communications back and forth where members are sending outside links as fraud, and we don't monitor those links. Before, messages from members that would be caught as fraud weren't deleted from the database, but just not shown to the user. So you'd get the "This message has been removed for abuse" in the subject line. The decision with the new MC was to allow these types of messages to be visible to the user with control for them to delete it. These both seem like frustrating ways to receive communication, I know. After some talk, we think we still want users to be able to see all their messages, and delete them as they wish, but we are working on adding more fraud preventive measures to the MC. The fraud script we run doesn't always catch members before they send something spammy, sometimes it catches them three days later, 7 days later... we are still going to show that email. However, we are hoping to add some type of highlight to a message that will mention whether this member's profile has been turned off, or if the message is suspected to be spam. Basically the same function as any other email service. You can see the text of the message, but it will be reported as spam.

Wow Aryana, this is more complicated then what was working before.
I have too agree with spunky too. Why the changes? Why not leave us with the old system. It was doing it job nicely.

Aryana, thank you for your detailed response.

I'd prefer the messages to be deleted completely so that I don't even know that they've been sent. We all know the rules - no exchange of personal details until a couple of emails have been exchanged, no external links - if you can't obey the rules your message gets deleted without the recipient being made aware of it, like you never sent it.

You do yourself a disservice though, most of these profiles are gone within 24 hours - no complaints there. However the emails persist.

What is most worrying is that all of these fake profiles are gold members...

Hello Aryana,
Hopefully this will be better with the new features being implemented. How ever I have many messages they keep building every day it is hard to go through each page and therefore the messages are being buried unless the person writes again. Then I can get to it and respond back.

Thank you for the update and clarifying your own filters... I do think it's a good idea to show members everything send, just like in other systems (even if they use a span or junk type folder). At least we can check and decide if it is legit - although I do appreciate that some people may not agree.

I will be interested to see how the new changes work, looking forward to trying them.

If I am among the 10 percent to get it, will try on those filter and give you feedback.

**I still had problem with 2 members so far who I can't read their newest email if they do write to me because of the missing slider on the right. The only way for me to see the bottom where it show the newest message is to refresh the open the page of message from that member and click to recheck the message, then I would see the new message. If too long, The top part could not be visible to me to read too. Also since no slider to scroll I can not read their older message and what I replied back to them.**

Lord, give me strength!
Aryana, have you not read the 40 pages of complaints you have had on the filter thread?
Many members there COMPLAIN about the new message centre, and say they would prefer to use the OLD one. I also posted on Andrews blog that you linked here, and members also stated there that they would prefer the option to be allowed to use the old message centre. What you need for this site is plain and simple, you are over complicating things, and when you keep making these updates, other areas of the site are being screwed up.
I have to agree with FullOn4u, about the messages from fakes, scammers and spammers, any message from a fake for fraud or abuse should be marked the same as it was in the old message centre and read "this message has been removed for abuse"
I really DON'T want to read these spam messages that are landing in my inbox daily here.
I feel sorry for the poor suckers who actually fall for this scam and go and open an account at Adulife to have their credit card details stolen.
Why can't we have an option to use the old message centre?
You seem to like options such as the new Nice, naughty and nasty filter options so why not give option to use old message centre?
If we have to keep the "new" message centre then i would like to see subject lines for each individual email. It's good enough for hotmail, yahoo and aol, so why not here?????
Also i would like to see the date each email has been sent, the "sent days ago" or "months ago" really is not good enough.
Why do i feel like i'm banging my head against a brick wall here?
Seriously i am getting really annoyed with this site, and you are going to lose me as a paying customer if this carries on.

It's bad enough that the fake sites are waging a cyberwar against everyone who signs up here, but to read that this was a management decision to let members see just how much spam they get so they can then decide what to do with it...

Well, that's just about the dumbest thing I've read from Affairlook management ever!

The message you're sending when you allow spammers to contact us, or those fake e-mails the site itself sends, is that the spammers are too smart for you, and that the paying customers aren't important enough to filter out the spam.

I pay my money, write my emails to profiles that catch my eye, and then I go to work. I come back, and WOW! I have mail... But then... FUCK. It's more "relovero" or "adulife" or whatever...

Do you have any idea about the unintended consequences here? Instead of this site being someplace to hook up with real people who aren't prostitutes, it's seen as a spammer's delight. What incentive do I have, as a real member, to stay?

I even have my Cupid filter on and I'm still getting the spam mail!

Moreover, instead of fighting this, the direction of those in charge is about cosmetics: home pages no one likes, message centres that get 40 pages full of complaints, a new e-mail system that won't let you attach your profile so that unless you mail paying members, they won't even be able to check you out!

Check your compass, because your priorities are off.

Very simply put, and from all the evidence I'm not in the minority, I don't understand how all these fake profiles are gold members and I don't want to read their mail.

I know many don't agree, I no longer care. I HATE the new messege center and have said so from day ONE. I would love the option to have it back. I could even understand if you gave the option to use the old messege center to those of us who where here when it was in use and NOT to the new people as they wouldn't know what they are missing. They would come in with the new version and learn the new version. I personally would use the old MC in a heartbeat if given the chance and I know others that would as well. There is my two cents.

How did you choose the "lucky" 10%?.

Is this just a test - to see how they like it, before you roll it out to everyone?

Or is this a result of complaints about the changes you already forced on us?

This is not "Big Brother", this is spam-filtering.

It already happens in the real world for email accounts - Hotmail, etc and your ISP will be filtering out tons of spam messages without you seeing them or even knowing about them. This isn't something you need to be worried about, this is part of the service you pay for!

The problem with spam on this site is compounded by the new message centre - because you don't get to see many emails, since they did away with titles, your inbox soon becomes blocked up with spam.

It does seem that Affairlook has rolled over and given in to the spammers, which is not good coming from a commercial site. They know they have a problem and have decided that, despite what they customers say, it doesn't matter.

But to slap on the irony, several bloggers (me included) have found that if they try to copy these spam emails into their blog posts then the post is denied because it contains "personal details".

So Affairlook does monitor content, just not spam emails...

I still miss the folder concept to tuck everything away so the inbox only has emails that I want to see. Selecting filters just isn't the same. Personally, I like the way Google has its web mail set up.

It would be nice to be able to "hide" a label unless if a new conversation comes in. Then that label will show until the new conversation is read.

Being able to apply the same label to multiple conversations seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes it'll work, sometimes that circle just goes round and round.

Agree with everything that FullOn4U said. I also tried to do a blog the other day about the spam messages from Adulife and Rolvero, etc, but my blog was denied by the site because i included the Adulife details. Why is the site happy for these spam messages to drop into our inboxes daily, but as soon as we try to post blogs about it, we are "denied" from doing so.
I had to edit my blog post to remove the website names.
Why not have it here?
I agree with rdy2try4, i would much prefer it if the site got rid of the new message centre and went back to the old way. It was much more user friendly than the new version.
I Hate having to keep clicking "Get more conversations" to scroll down to more messages, what a stupid and frustratingly long winded way of getting to your older emails.
Our feedback is just falling on deaf ears though, so right now i am searching for a different site to go and spend my hard earned cash on, one that is'nt owned by Various Inc, or Penthouse!!!

Giving us choices for setting our own preferences is a step in the right direction but the truth is it's a bad design.

Email is one of the first things people learn on the internet and all of them are designed the same basic way. Selectable folders which typically tell you what needs your attention. IE: (22 unread) Next step is to open up your inbox. Once there you should see
"WHO SENT IT", "DATE AND TIME", and "A FLIPPEN SUBJECT LINE"

Also what happen to? bold, italics, underline, attaching your profile, and spell check?

Improving your email isn't a bad idea but what you did would be like an tire company coming out with a new wheel that's no longer round.

While I understand that changes are not always well received, digital communication is evolving. New devices and platforms are affecting user expectations. Changes to foster accommodation become incumbent upon the site.

I fully understand that digital communication is evolving but email has NEVER changed because it works. Text messaging, IM, facebook, twitter, the endless variety of phone apps, the list goes on and on but part of that list WILL ALWAYS BE EMAIL. You can improve the appearance, you can improve filters, you can add folders, every improvement should make it easier not harder. An improvement should never have to be justified or explained because people will accept it with open arms.

When I go to check my email I want to see one thing, THE MESSAGES THAT ARE IN MY INBOX! When I click on the envelope icon it should take me to my inbox, nothing more, nothing less. Emails are similar to a letter you would send via snail mail. If I don't want it anymore, I throw it away. Now I can't delete any email because it erases the entire conversation not just that email. I don't need or want every piece of information I've shared with someone to show up. If I want to have a conversation with someone I'll use some form of IM or a phone.

Did I just read this:
"We recognize that there are always trade offs, but we have to consider the greater good, some changes are made for reasons that average members may not realize."?

So... Are you guys familiar with the terms "condescending" or "arrogance"?

Once again, you've shown us what you think of us. We tell you what we like, what we experience, and what we don't like, but in essence you're telling us we're too stupid to understand your reasoning...

Thanks! I love a site that presumes itself superior to its membership's intellect.

Just to jump in here for a second..Although I am not speaking for Aryana I do understand why she used the @ symbol. On another site where folks post and leave messages, the use of the @ symbol and # are now in common use. When I send a msg to someone at another site it is always done with the @ in front of their name..and if I chose to post to more then one person at a time or reply to questions it is always done like this @a lady @a man..NO & between the words..Hope this helps.

Hi Aryana, thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to say a lot of what you said just did'nt make any sense at all though.
Where can i start???
You never answered the comment from Heartcollector, who said her messages won't scroll on her iPad if the messages fill the window. I've also seem similar comments elsewhere on this site, in blogs and groups, etc, who say they cannot get the message centre to work on their handheld devices, phones, iPads, etc.
You say the whole reason behind the new message centre is to ease communication between members, on a range of devices, more for phones, etc. Well NEWSFLASH it does'nt seem to be working does it.
If members can't get their messages to scroll down on handheld devices how in the hell is that easing communication for them?
Yet a few members i've spoken to said they COULD easily get and read all their messages with the old message centre using mobile phones, iPad, etc. They have only had problems since new message centre was rolled out.
At the same time, the MAJORITY of your members will probably be accessing the site through laptops or PC's, and it is these MAJORITY of members who would prefer to use the old message centre instead of the new one. I don't care how you try to wriggle out of it, the old message centre WAS much more user friendly than this new one. It was easy, plain and simple, just the way email should be!
I agree with the others who say the staff are arrogant and condescending, we've just been told by Aryana the new message centre is used to close loopholes spammers use to upgrade and email freely.
Clearly it is'nt working because all the spammers from Adulife and Rolvero, etc, are all GOLD MEMBERS here and they already ARE emailing freely!
Aryana how did the management decide the new message centre would be beneficial for the majority of users on the site?
I never once saw a poll done on the site by staff that asked the members how they felt about it. The new message centre was forced on us and we were never asked for feedback or what we would prefer.

Now JT, i have seen many suggestions over the years put forward by members, on this blog, on site support blog, in the Live from A.F.F group and other groups, blogs, etc, to fight the fakes and stop them gaining a foothold on the site. It seems the site just does'nt want to tackle this problem.
Some suggestions to tackle the fakes, (not just from me but what other members have put forward aswel, i kept a note of them).
1. Written part of profiles are reviewed separately from profile photos, by different teams in different departments. This is a stupid way of going about it. Profiles should be reviewed as ONE WHOLE package, by the same team in the same department. Every profile photo should be checked against the written part to check it matches the description given, and also matches description given in the personal statistics. I've seen no end of profiles on here that say the person is white, then when you look at the photo it is of a black or asian person. Errr, Hello, how can the site not see that and get it right?
I'm just asking the site to apply some basic common sense, but this seems to be beyond their understanding for some reason?
2. Use a Tineye or Google image check on profile photos, if they are stolen from porn sites, or photos of famous people (and yes i have seen profile pics of Elivis, lol) these photos should be rejected by the site, and the persons profile should be removed, no question!
3. When i joined the site in 2008 before i could send an email to anyone i had to type in an anti spam number on the profile. These anti spam numbers were randomly generated by the site, and you HAD to input the random 3 digit anti spam number before you could send an email. WHY DID THE SITE GET RID OF THIS FEATURE?
4. The site could use some sort of Captcha device for new members signing up here, and before they can make a profile they should be asked to put the Captcha word into a box.
Also instead of an anti spam number described in point 3 you could also use Captcha on profile pages, put in the captcha word before you can send an email to someone.
These 4 measures alone WOULD DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FAKES ON THE SITE.
The site just seem happy to roll over and let the fakes win though.
Now Aryana i'm sorry if you think i'm being hard on you, but i really think the management have got it wrong on this BIG TIME!
Why can't they just admit they were wrong on the new message centre and roll back to the old version?
I do have to say well done though for now putting dates on each email sent. Also for saying you'll use a banner or lightbox on the homepage before making any changes to the site in future.

I so totally AGREE with this. If I wanted to have a 'conversation' I would use the IM NOT the MC. Instant message for conversations, emails for messages!!! I am ALLLL FOR THIS. Yes, I know the IM/IMC here doesn't work well, then work on improving that, but I do not that I don't have an email message center AT ALL. Most people have said this. This man so totally outlines my thoughts, thank you very much Sir!! I have Outlook Express for emails/messages and use an IM/IMC such as Y*h** or Sk**e, definitely a phone if it is THAT important/ Any of those if I want to talk directly live time. I do not need them merged together nor do I like it.

Hi Aryana, thankyou for your detailed reply. When you said the dates had been added to the emails, i went and checked this in my Message Centre. The only date shown is for the last message in a "conversation".
I'd like to see the dates for each individual email sent. The only date available is the last message in a conversation, all previous emails in the conversation still read "days ago" or "months ago".
I also agree with JillBlueJack, that the time of the email should also be shown alongside the date, both the time and the date were shown in the old message centre for each INDIVIDUAL email.
As JillBlueJack said the time the email was sent is important, especially if you are arranging a meet with someone on here (if its a spur of the moment, last minute type meeting).
Other suggestions, to start with the new message centre only shows 10 conversations. This is not nearly enough for people, mainly women, lol, who get hundreds of emails on here. The old message centre had 50 emails per page. One click and you could access 50 emails in your inbox. Now you have to click "get more conversations" 5 times before you'll see the 50th email. How is that more efficient i'll never know????
Could you show 50 conversations on the new message centre, 10 is not enough.
Another suggestion, .....folders.
I'd like to see the following......

1. Inbox folder, or you may call it a "conversation" folder.

2. A spam or Junk mail folder.

3. A deleted messages folder. As it is now if you delete a message then it is gone and there is no way of getting it back. What if someone deletes a message by mistake?

Also i'd like to have the option to only delete one message in a conversation. As it is now, if you press delete then it deletes the whole conversation. I don't like this. As MetroMale39 said members don't always want to keep every email sent or received, we should have the power to delete individual emails, and not only whole conversations.

But everything i've suggested was already available in the old message centre, a more traditional style type of email system is what i prefer and is easier for everyone to use. Not everyone here on this site will be computer literate, many people may only have knowledge of using a basic email type system, you should not forget about those people and overlook them, which is what you seem to be doing with this new message centre.

Hiya Aryana, nice pic! One thing I find being a step-down is the inability for me to view how many messages do i have in my inbox. It just says "View more messages". But it doesn't show how many pages as it did previously and it doesn't show as many messages as before in plain sight. Why spoil a good thing just to have a more modern but less functional interface?

Also, Andrew gave me an unlimited Gold Membership that has no expiry date because of my help in beta testing. But when i updated my profile, it changed back to a year. Can you change it back to 0/0/0 again please?

@Centaur_UK I hear what you're saying and really do get where you're coming from. When the Message Center was being AB tested, the new message center design won over the old one. More people switched over and communicated through the newer version versus the old one. When we opened the feature to all members, it was also used by a higher percentage than those using the old version. When we rolled it out to all users, there were bugs that affected it's functionality, and we focused on addressing the glitches and are still focused on providing a stable and well functioning MC. While we won't be switching back to the old version, we ARE open to hearing what changes to the current system you would like to see. For example, a detailed time stamp, the ability to delete particular messages from a thread and not the entire thread, a better way to scroll through all messages, the ability to store messages in folders-- we want to hear what you think would better your experience with this system and we will work to implement these in the next phases. I have also reached out to members personally who have been having experiencing issues on mobile to help them and get the bugs they're experiencing fixed.

You provided some suggestions about fraud, and I hope I can provide some insight. 1. In this case, the process is what it is. Our current Report function helps our abuse team to remove fraudulent profiles when members report them. We know that mismatches happen, and have fraud detection and blocks in place that prevent thousands of profiles a day from ever appearing on the site. Our abuse team is very aware of the importance of removing fraud from the site (it's not good for you, and it's not good for us!) and know the most frequent tactics spammers use. We're able to detect a majority of those tactics before they sign up, but if they happen to get through using mismatched profiles, please report them and we will take care of it. This process also helps us detect if those profiles are coming from any new channels so we can better combat the spam in the future. It's an ongoing process, and it is not perfect, but our abuse team focuses on this deeply and is committed to getting rid of it to the best of their ability.
    2. We do use those services you mentioned, but they are not integrated when reviewing a profile. Those services are not perfect either and don't catch everything; it is not the best use of resources to invest in integrating those services because they don't work well enough on the scale that our reviewers face. We have, however, looked into it, and our agents do use those services when reviewing profiles that are reported for abuse.
3&4. New female users are still required to enter a captcha to sign up and a numeric code to send messages. They are required to use this code for an amount of time we cannot share until they become a trusted member. You do not have to enter this number anymore because you're a trusted member, so you won't see it, but a new member will still have to use it.

We understand your concerns, and anything that we can do to improve the never-ending battle against fraud will help both members and the site. We are currently working on a project to add more stops to fraud on the new MC. Based on what FullOn and others have stated here, the first stop we're implementing is hiding spam messages instead of leaving them visible even when the profile has been removed from the site.
Who are these people who liked the new message center because every person I've met from here hates it. Two real women left because the new message center "Was a royal f'en pain!" in their opinion. Thats the PC version of what they had to say. Their actual description was much worse.

You have to remember that not everyone who uses your site will be internet savvy. At the same time, experienced web users look at your email/message center as a flippen joke.

It's hard enough to meet real people and your new message center isn't helping. Things are getting lost, messages are getting deleted, conversations end up being buried under a pile of garbage.

You said the old message center isn't coming back. Fine, but why on earth would I continue to spend money on a website that is actually making it harder for me to meet real people?
