Bling - Is it Going Away?

No.

Bling is NOT going away. The only change coming in the near future is that you won't be able to use Bling as a background for your profile.

There is concern because of 2 reasons:
1) We are redesigning the navigation on the site. Many of you have already tested it out. In that redesign there wasn't a clear section or link to Bling on the main page. We'll put a link to Bling into the new Community section. Point is, you'll still be able to get to it.

2) Bling is being removed from profile backgrounds. So are custom colors. These options are still available for groups, signatures, blogs...everywhere you could use them before.

When do Blings go away from my profile background?
You can expect that this change will happen before the clock strikes 2012. If you have Bling in the background of your profile, it will simply go away.

I'll give you a long heads up before this happens. Hope this helps clear up some of the questions about what's happening to Bling. I know people are concerned.

I know, I'm PC - sorry it just happens when you deliver news many don't want to hear. I think there was misinformation and concern bling was going away everywhere, so that's what I meant.

I think it's a shame the custom colours and bling backgrounds are going, they brighten the place up and make it more interesting to look at.

Really good move to put up this post though. There's so much confusion over this, and a lot of people have got the idea that bling was being completely abolished everywhere.

Once these misnomers take hold they spread like crazy. Some of us do try to put people straight, but a lot of folks just believe what they heard somewhere. More posts like this please to clarify stuff. Then we can refer people to it, so they get info straight from the horse's mouth. (Do you have that saying in USA ? Not that I'm saying you look like a horse you understand Ryan, neigh mate... well a bit maybe )

How about the templates option? Will that be offered soon after the redesign is officially launched?

I really wish they'd reconsider this decision. Viewing profiles is going to become quite monotonous if they all look alike. *Yawn* And I don't understand the reasoning behind only removing backgrounds from profiles but not from groups or blogs. If individual backgrounds are acceptable in groups and blogs, why not also on our profiles?

At least having a few templates of color scemes would be nice to have that member can choose for a profile background. There are a several sites that allow that.

The bright White background is quite blinding for some of us or even many. Would be nice if another color were to be chosen instead of bright white that had a little contrast.

For example;

I'm pretty sure that Ryan said the reasoning is that Various Inc want the site, and affiliate sites, to look 'uniform' when navigating profiles.

I agree with you though. To me 'uniform' says bland, dull, boring. I don't use a bling profile background but do use custom colours, I like to see the profiles that do use it though, and think it adds a great deal of artistry, interest and humour to the look of the site. There are some great blingsters around and they bring the site alive, as do custom colours to a lesser extent.

It seems to me that Various Inc want to achieve uniformity for the sake of corporate branding and identity. I think this is a big mistake and will detract greatly from the aesthetic of the site(s).

Another positive side effect of profile bling and custom colours is that it virtually guarantees a member is genuine and not a fake/scammer. It would take a dedicated scammer to use these modifications and as we can see from the ludicrous nature of most fake profiles they don't try very hard on the authenticity front.

I see a bling here on this post which in (my opinion) should be removed it is against a former top blogger and although she has left the site the bling was made to poke fun at her (and her minions )this is the type of bling which should be removed along with the maker and users
It is causing lot'sd of friction on the site

I think your guess is spot on, suits them all round really, hope I'm wrong but I can't see them being talked out of it.

I googled my handle a while back and was on so many sites it was incredible, countries worldwide, and all manner of different persuasions. The funniest was a TV site where there was a snippet of a conversation between me and a Scottish male friend (straight both of us) but he is wearing the kilt in his profile pic so probably looks semi-authentic, you've just reminded me I forgot to take the piss out of him about that... can't pass that up, I'll do it straight away

I'll actually be glad when the customer colors and such get rolled back.

A lot of folks love customizing their profiles to the point that the profiles screens are busy, hard to read, and the colors clash. It makes an otherwise typical profile look garish and ugly. It's rare I've seen one that made a profile look better. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to read a profile with hard to read fonts and where the design features a light font on a light background.

What a lot of folks don't realize is that the colors can look different in different browsers and on different monitors. If I had my druthers they would also put some limits on the color and customization of all of the user.

Keeping the look of the profiles more consistent will also improve the overall look of the site, it will actually make it look cleaner and more professional. (think of how spaceMy looks as compared to bookFace).

On the other hand, I get that people want to ability to express themselves creatively on this site. A coupe of suggestions:

1. Maybe the site could offer free form pages (the first couple for free and then additional pages for a price) where they can put their designs, bling, and any other creative graphics.

2. Maybe offer people limited options for background and font colors (2-4 each) so that people get a choice but those choices won't render the screen unreadable. maybe you can even offer these choices in packages (i.e. certain background colors in conjunction with certain font and/ort highlight colors).

There's actual scientific research that proves that Affairlook and all the site members would actually benefit by encouraging us to show our creativity on our profiles.

In a 2005 study called "Schizotypy, creativity and mating success in humans" by Daniel Nettle and Helen Keenoo from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Open University in the UK, it was shown that "creative people are often considered to be very attractive and get lots of attention as a result. They tend to be charismatic and produce art and poetry that grabs people's interest." The study also showed that the more creative a person was, the higher the number of sexual encounters the person had. The artistic personality may encourage sexual exploration.

Now, why would Affairlook want to stifle that?

Well we are not going to have any back ground bling!!!! so what next??? Are they going to tell us how many words or limit us on the number of lines of writing we can have on our profiles and then tell every member what they can say!!! Well I quess they want a uniform looking sight, and uniform worded profile. Than every member could be a fake, after all we would all be the same!!! so one profile pic for men, and one for woman and one for couple!!!!

It greatly saddens me to read this Ryan.
Why are the people who run this site going ahead with this decision, when there is clearly a huge backlash of opinion against this change to the site from members?
You've seen all the feedback and strength of feeling from loyal members of this site on this blog and in your group.
Clearly the people who run this site could'nt care less what the site members think, and no doubt in future they'll just continue to steam roller their changes on the site, without giving a dam or second though to what the members want. As has already been said by other people, profile background bling and custom colours on people's profiles almost 99.9% guarantees that member is a genuine member and not a fake, scammer. Fakes and scammers never use bling or custom colours on their profiles!
What men and women on the site want to see are other genuine member profiles. If all the profiles look the same, you will actually be aiding the fakes and scammers in their game, by taking profile background bling and custom colours away from us. We don't want this site to look like bookface, its dull, boring and bland!
As i've said elsewhere, if or when this change is made to the site, then i WON'T be upgrading my membership ever again when my current Gold membership expires. I've been here as a paying customer for 3 and a half years. Well done Affairlook, you've just LOST a Loyal paying customer. When my Gold expires, i think it maybe time for me to take my money and my custom elsewhere to another site that is NOT run by various Inc. Not only the bling issue, getting REALLY fed up with all the Fake and scam profiles on here aswel! I also suspect you are going to lose many other genuine, long time, loyal customers over this bling change to the site. Trying to get our point across is like banging ones head against a brick wall....absolutely pointless, and just gives you a headache!

In response to your comment, i sometimes make bling, i don't steal images from the internet and make them into bling. All the blings i made are my own original design. You can check it out on my profile if you like!
Also all the bling i made is free to anyone. I don't charge people for my bling.
I don't make much bling, but even those on here who make loads of bling, offer some for free while charging points for others.
You seem to be tarring all the bling makers with the same brush in your comments, which is wrong.
No wonder so many people are voting to disagree with your comments.
Some of us do make our own designs and allow other people to take bling for free. I often gift my bling to profiles i like on here for free.
When bling makers do sell their bling for points, they can then only re-use the points on this site. Its not like a cash machine you can withdraw funds from and then go and spend the money in the outside world.
Also i'm here on this site to meet people, and swapping or gifting bling can often be a good ice breaker, or conversation starting point when making contact, or emailing someone you have an interest in meeting.

Clearly we disagree on the issue of the blings. I do realise its only the profile bling backgrounds and profile custom colours that are being removed from the site, the point i've made is this will only serve to help the thousands of fake and scam profiles more easily blend into the site if all profiles look the same.
That CAN'T be good for the site at all!
Bling making to me, is or can be just as creative as any photo or video ANY member here can upload to their profile.
We all know that profile photos and videos can and have been stolen from the internet and posted on fake and scam profiles on here, just as images can be taken and made into bling. Why are members here on the site who love bling being singled out and having a feature of the site they enjoy taken away???
Sorry but can't see any justification for it whatsoever.

It may be laughable to you, but i've been on the site over 3 years now, and have never seen a fake or scam profile use profile background bling or custom colours on their profiles. In my experience of using the site probability of a profile with background bling or custom colours being genuine is over 95%
There may be a few fakes and scammers who do use bling or custom colours but they are few and far between.
Maybe you are not aware of the extent of the problem reguarding fake and scam profiles on here???
Also your experience of the site will differ greatly to mine as i'm a male member and you are female. Ryan has admitted in one of his group question/ answer sessions, the biggest group of fakes, scammers on the site are single female profiles, and these are the profiles i look at day in and day out. I'm well aware many genuine members don't use bling at all. There are many methods of telling a fake from a genuine profile on here, use of bling background or custom colours is just one indicator among many.

I don't make bling, I only recently started using it after four years here but now enjoy using it. But I have always liked seeing it about the place, it brings life and vibrancy to the appearance of the site, some of it is beautiful, some funny, some clever. To me the proposed "uniform" appearance is dull, bland, and boring to look at. People use it as another way to express their individuality. Some is artistic, and many people would argue more so than a video, one mans art is another mans blah it is not for any of us to dictate what is art. It is also not for anybody to dictate how and where people should express their art. The site provides the facility to create and use bling therefore it is an intended and valid use of the site.

It is used by people (me included) in emails as part of the interaction leading to meets, it is used in blogs and groups and on profiles. Therefore the people who make it are doing something for a complete cross section of members who use it. This site is not only intended for people to meet at all, it is a diverse and inclusive place used by a wide cross-section of people for a wide variety of reasons. The proof that meets are not the only intended purpose is that the site provides so many other facilities for members to use, and many people do use them and enjoy the site in many different ways, one use is no more or less valid than another.

The fact that the extensive use of bling on a profile is virtually a guarantee that it is not a fake has not been stated by anybody as the main reason to keep it, however it is a fortunate and positive side effect of profile bling, and therefore yet another valid reason to keep it given the epidemic of fake profiles on the site. Experienced members can spot the fakes easily for many reasons, for newbies and those not 'in the know' it is not so easy and the existence of bling helps them in that way. But nobody here has suggested that it is the main reason to keep profile bling and colours.

I am curious.... if you are so anti bling and its use, why do you use it extensively on your profile ?

Don't see why i should pay for a website, service i'm not happy with. A few other members have also said they won't re-new their silver or gold memberships either. Make no doubt about it, Affairlook are going to lose paying customers over this change to the site!
Maybe thats the only language they understand?
When they get hit in the pocket, members start to leave or refuse to pay, then they might re-think this decision?
