Why Do I Show Online After I Leave?
Why Do I Show Online After I Leave? I was talking with LAHIFI about his blog where he focuses on issues around logging out. Specifically about why he sees people online that he knows aren't anymore. Here's how it works on our end... Logging In: When you log into the site, you get placed in an "Online Now" database table along with anyone else who is logged in. Whenever we display your information anywhere on the site, we first look at that table to see if your marked as "online." Logging Off: If you actually hit Log Off, we stop showing you as online. When if you click Log Off, we take your information out of the Online Now table. Every time someone looks at your information, we go back to that table, see your offline and display you as offline. Closing your browser, or computer without logging off: When you close your browser without logging off, we don't know about it. There's no flag to us that you've closed your browser, shut the lid on your laptop or turned off your computer. When there is not activity from you, we keep you in the Online Now table for 2 hours. After 2 hours, we consider you offline again. |

I don't think that's true every time. Last night night at about 11 pm I lost my internet connection and was unable to fix it until this morning, at 7 am. My friend told me I was shown as online. Also I could be away for days but would still be shown as online.

"Once upon a time..." We used to have indicators on out profiles telling folks if we were online, on IMC or broadcasting...when pray tell are those features going to return? You also need to account for server lag in this equation...like add two hours to your two hours if we don't log off...and don't get me started on the IMC and it's problem of showing folks online when they are not...

Where is this Nassy? "Don't forget, there are those that click on the "Keep me logged in until I log out" who don't realize that is exactly what the servers are doing."

I will add that we have a separate issue with chat. Like you, I've been stuck online in group chat for days before. This was when I closed my browser but didn't log off. Still, I should have been booted after 2 hours.

When you do a fresh log in, there is a little box that gives you that option where you type in your username and password. You never saw it?

Now if they can't fix the time stamps for the different zones, or account for Daylight Savings Time or for those that don't change clocks, does that mean your two hours are added to his two hours and then multiplied by the number of time zones? Do we exponentially increase if you are stuck in a chat room for days on end? Don't forget, there are those that click on the "Keep me logged in until I log out" who don't realize that is exactly what the servers are doing.

I have been having a problem with being online and tells people I am off line? But when u look in the chat room, my name is there? I liked it better when u could log in, till I logged out. I even logged out and logged back in right away, still shows me as being off line, right now?

Even if you log out, the site will still show you're online after you log out. I know because I've logged out so someone else could sign in multiple times and I still see myself showing up as online, even showing up as still being on Instant Messenger after signing out. I'm sure it's good advice to remind people to log-out rather than closing their windows and I'm sure it works better. However, I think it's extremely patronizing to tell customers that if they log-out, they will not show up as being online when it's clear that this is not the case.

You should be handling the 'onbeforeUnload' event and do a synchronous ajax call to record they have closed the browser.

Yes. Either the "sign off" at the top right or the "log off" on the bottom left will show your profile as offline quicker than if you simply close the browser, tab or window.
