See, this is where learning German gets really tough. At least for me. So many languages have very specific meaning to words. English is quite possibly the worst in that regard, where layers of meaning surround each and every choice we write/speak. Whereas German is like, "Eh, I threw it at the wall and it mostly stuck. Good enough." "Ich wünsche allen einen schönen Samstag!!" "I wish all a beautiful Saturday." None of the books, closed captioning, lessons, or even Rosetta Stone I studied by would give me the literal translations. They'd always give the intended meaning translations. Which is great ... until you're trying to learn the language by breaking it down. At least that was my stumbling block. So many German words are so variable in meaning that even with context it was hard to follow what was meant by what was being said. Then throw in the constant use of idioms that I didn't grow up with and good golly. What was that? Something about standing upside down? Oh, you're confused? Well so am I! Four years of immersion and I was still extremely thankful that Germany teaches English to everyone. Even if it was more British English than US English with words like "flat" for apartment and "chips" for fries, etc. Fortunately I watched British TV on PBS as a kid, so I could translate from English to English. Still, it was fun. At least I got to learn some different world perspectives, even if I probably did pick up more Badische than Hochdeutsch. I'm glad to be back with good old US customer service. Even if we do outsource it to India. But I do miss nights with friends in the biergarten with liters on-tap hefeweizen flowing and leberkase to settle it. I also miss Wisconsin cheese curds, Chicago deep dish, and Portlandian Pho. But I've gained Philly cheesesteak. It's all give and take. Shame we can't take it all with us somehow.
