The VDay thing is reminiscent of the people who go to church regularly, but are complete assholes the rest of the week, believing that the one hour of church makes up for everything else.

I could definitely be called a Romantic, in a literary/life philosophy sense -- in that I advocate the primacy of the individual while at the same time preaching that we're all connected, really. But Valentine's Day with me won't be celebrated at an overpriced restaurant. Not once have I done that, even though the men I've dated would have been glad to do that. I make sure to tell that to everyone I date. I'm with you on doing things, just 'cause. Sitting with my hubby on our porch after a back-breaking day of labor and enjoying a drink together is far more romantic than some big gesture because those days are the stuff of the really Real Life. Building a life together, through all the thick and thin, through the pain and frustration that any relationship can cause, and still seeing the person you fell in love with even though his face is streaked with sweat and dirt?

That's romance.

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

Pretty great post and we feel the same! Hubby hates Feb 14, but would send an unexpected sms to say he loves me any time and it makes me feel special...

I still would not mind you pitching on a horse and bowling me over (with your personality, not with the horse!)
Pitching on a horse? Sounds kinky.

It wouldn't be weird to ask, but I'm not fathering any homunculi.

I wrote a paper once about a patient of mine...She had to go into the hospital the day of her husband's funeral. So, she had to mourn and grieve while sick and wheelchair bound. It was so beautiful though, the thing she said that got me was how he used to lay out a towel for her when she was taking a bath, so she could get on it on the bed and wrap up after her bath..how she would miss that. Still gets to me! That is romance to me!
