There is a great show on the History channel called Vikings. You may find it interesting. I just like that Ireland is green and the people have a sharp sense of humor. Dublin looks as if it has many things for a person to do. I like that. Did catch some programs on the Vikings - much watch out for a series on the History Channel. Dublin has so much it's more than a weekend visit, but around the countryside there are lots of one day visits worth the time too, sea, mountains, boating, fishing, historic and pre-histooric sites.... maybe you might get to visit one day.

At 16 she is a seasoned traveler It also helps that we like the same things and have the same attitude/outlook about traveling. We'll definitely plan on visiting both Glasgow and Dublin during the summer months to increase our chances of having nice weather

You are welcome Travel Junkie, London is full of excitement, been a while since I visited. Dublin is great too, once the weather is on your side, as is Glasgow. It's wonderful to be able to travel and see places, and great that you can bring you "kid" with you to share the experiences. Thank you! When the kid and I were deciding where we wanted to go on vacation, Dublin came up as an option but ultimately we went with London this time. But this series, and Mimi's, make me think we need to branch out from London and see Glasgow and Dublin on our next vacations Dublin is great too, once the weather is on your side, as is Glasgow. I look forward to the continuation of this series, and found the tie-in to the Vikings especially interesting. These posts are so much more interesting than anything I learned in school. I recall my Dad singing a song when we were little, which mentioned Brian Boru. Now, thanks to oogle, I can find out mroe. I'll have to ask the sister who has done all the genealogical research, about our Irish roots. [image] I have finished the series... posted them in reverse order... silly me...lol.... and thanks for reading, it was interesting for me to write, mostly from memory but had to cross check a few things. 2. Dublin Part 2 A bit of History and Culture 3. Dublin Part 3 Modern Dublin Was discussing recently, whether the next generation will be so immersed in their ipods and earphone that interesting stuff will be lost, but then there is the oogling place which is a mine of information if we look. My father used to sing while driving, or tell us stories of the places we were passing, now it's the CD or car radio or worse still, headphones.

I'm so glad you did this. I may pimp it on my blog, if that's ok? I forgot about the Georgian buildings. I remember loving them when I was there. Heading over to the next one!!! And it was all inspired by yourself and your series. [image] A quick reminder of the Georgian doors of Dublin, attached to some fine building.

Do they still mint ha'pennies? Over here, there is talk of doing away with the penny, as it is becoming obsolete with inflation. [image] There have been several changes to the currency since I was born. Decimalisation - Changing from 240 old pence to 100 new pence in the Pound. The Punt - breaking the link to Sterling and introducing the Irish pound. The Euro - well we joined the Euro zone of currencies and lost control of our own monies. The ha'penny was 1/2 of an old penny (we used to have a farthing too which was 1/4 of an old penny) - They stopped making both a long time ago and the smallest coin is now called a Cent since we joined the Euro. The old ha'penny would be worth 1/2 a US cent these days.

Next time you need to take time to stop and have a Guinness or a coffee and a bite to eat and explore a bit. [image] It is in complete contrast to the West, which has a beauty all to itself and if you need more info or a tourist guide do not hesitate to ask.

Aaaahhh... Dublin is a great town! Done a couple of tours there, very interesting history. [image] Dublin's O'Connell Street at Christmas with the GPO and status of James Larkin, leader of the Irish Labour Movement and, in 1912, founded the Irish Labour Party , currently in Government.

Ty Gerk some very interesting info here. Love the Viking time period in history. Some beautiful pictures too. [image] In Dublin they set up a trading village and were not so much the Viking raiders that we are accustomed to hearing of. But sure they were fierce in their own way. Discoveries of "peaceful" Viking settlements in Ireland has lead to close binds between us and the Viking Nations and a better understanding of how life was in those days.
