Moondance...

Today is one ‒ and if not the only but of the very few exceptions...- occasion that I will not be faithful to my habit/personal tradition of having either one of my weird stories or a «transcription» of an instrumental piece of music posted every Saturday. Instead there is just a song and some notes on it but in a very different way to the one I do that every Friday...Why is that exception? There are a number of reasons...
a) Because for some time now I don’t feel anxious or worried the day that there is a full moon. Like I have written sometimes in the past I don’t believe in astrological predictions and I’m by no means superstitious, actually any anxiety hadn’t ever to do with me. But I have noticed the effect that the full moon had ‒ for reasons that I don’t know and, if truth is to be told, I don’t really care to find out ‒ on some people close to me...and most times that effect was not that good, sometimes it was just very bad. So I got to really dislike the idea of the full moon but fortunately something like that doesn’t happen for some months now...and even more today. The celebration only of this fact is already a good enough reason...
b) Like I have also written in the past I don’t particularly like the moon, I don’t think that there is anything very beautiful or even extraordinary about it and that means that I don’t think too that full moons is really one of the wonders of this world that we are so very lucky to experience. Just a regular astronomical phenomenon really...And I always believed that the most interesting and beautiful stars are to be found on this planet...amidst the samples of our species (OK, for me the female ones, to be more accurate!). But like everybody says the most beautiful full moon is that of August...So if there is one full moon that somehow deserved a post dedicated to it that couldn’t be any other than the one that we have today!
c) As you are going to see the incident that the song is talking about takes place in October...I know by all means ‒ and since quite some time ago - that something like that couldn’t happen to me in October, not this October at least. So if you are going to write about something that there is in your imagination, that you somehow dream of and it’s supposed to happen on a certain moment of time...better do it before that moment comes, it’s more reasonable that way, don’t you think so? No to mention that the closest there is to the October sky is that of August...Actually it is that of September but then the September full moon isn’t as beautiful as the one of August! But yes, I cheated on that one, I admit it!
So the song for today is Van Morrison’s «Moondance», personally for me the best, the most wonderful song ever written for love and the moon (or the moon and love)...or just love under the moonlight. The song that gave the title to his third album from 1970 (together with the second, 1968’s «Astral Weeks», most probably his greatest work ever) and somehow similar in style and almost in the same mood as «Brown Eyed Girl», the brilliant single that launched his solo career after leaving Them, «Moondance» is simply and truly one of Morrison’s best composing moments, revealing the other side of its influences (except of the more obvious one from rhythm ‘n’ blues and soul), that from jazz and showing him in a very clear light as the true maverick he was at the time. The lyrics, as you are going to see, have all the inherent spirituality that always was a trait of his Irish soul and here translates into a love for nature and a real zest for life itself. But at the same time they also have a visible dream ‒ like quality and go well beyond from being mere words for a pop song to the point that sometimes they really transcend into the realm of poetry, something that is expressed even through the making of phrases and words too that all of his own (like that...outerspacederived «fantabulous»!).
But and the overall performance not only matches the excellent writing but even betters it...First of all it has a model arrangement with the key part given to the piano that carries the main theme throughout the whole song. A little after the intro the horns get in in a very breezy, summery and almost playful way that follows suit Morrison’s syncopated, jazzy and rather restrained singing. But a little after the middle (it is quite long and even more for its era, four and a half minutes) things change...After a short instrumental bridge that is comprised of an even jazzier piano passage and a saxophone outburst Van at last lets loose in the last part of the song. The rhythm ‘n’ blues element together with the screamer - that he can so well be...- come out of his chest while the instruments around him are getting harder and their parts are accented more heavily. In the last chorus he really belts out his lines like he is overwhelmed, almost possessed, literally shaking with passion while a sonic storm is raging at the background until just before the finale when, in a very neat twist, everything comes back to the elegant mood of the beginning...
All those just mean that if you are going to look at the moon for sometime tonight, with somebody else or even alone, there isn’t a more appropriate song to listen to! And if you think that you don’t have a reason to believe me maybe you are going to change your mind after reading what follows...
Well it's a marvellous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
Can I just have one a-more moondance with you my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you my love
Well I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait 'til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can't hide
One more moondance with you in the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la in the moonlight
On a magic night
Can't I just have one more dance with you my love?

But the last word can only be to the brightest than every moon star, my brightest star...Just to have a clearer picture of it let me give you some more details: Both of us dressed only in black ‒ I think that in this case we are not just allowed but we should indulge in our common chromatic preference...‒ and you specifically in the best evening dress money can buy (but hey, I’m talking about the kind of money I make, I have to make that clear! Because I never give ‒ or even imply doing so ‒ promises that I can’t keep!). And one of the things that define a really good evening dress is that it can be taken off very fast and easily...Even more easily and faster than it takes to put it on!
Then we can really moondance, that’s at least the kind of moondance I like the most...Between the iridescences of two glasses of red wine and with the reflections of a candle or two on your face...until the very early morning hours, when there will be no moon in the sky. Full, fool or of any other kind...The lighting doesn’t really matter and either moon shadows or sun shadows can’t be anything less than perfect...as long as the cause of them is your body, with or even better without any clothes on. Even if those shadows just fall on it...
But just because Van says «one more moondance with you my love» that doesn’t mean that we should do the same...Only one can never be enough. Many, many more, as many as we can take...Then it wouldn’t be August, not even summer any more but we couldn’t care less about that. And of course we have the next summer...as well as all the others after that. That’s a promise and, like I said above, I always keep them. Until then, if you want to practice a little your dancing steps tonight, you can do it with all your ease in my mind...

(And something for catching up with certain comments before they are even been made because it is really boring to repeat the same things over and over again, even in responses...So I prefer to say all of them once and for good here and beforehand. Please don’t tell me, not even think that there is even a hint of romanticism in this post. Because there isn’t anything even slightly romantic in it and I could even swear before a court of law for that! What there is, if you are interested to know, is a lot of dreaming...That not only I’m not going to try to hide but I also say it without being asked. How more obvious it could be anyway, even in the song itself ‒ «all my dreams will come true»...So yes, it is a dream but filtered through a very clear perception, consideration and even estimation if you like of reality. And exactly because of that large parts of it, maybe even the whole of it, will be realized someday...
But that has absolutely nothing to do with romanticism which for me pretty much is...«I’m living inside my head oblivious to everything that exists and happens outside it», if I have to be true! And that is something that I never did and I will never do...So don’t talk to me about romanticism. If it works for somebody it is fine by me but don’t try to make me believe that it is necessarily good for everybody and even more that the slightest part of it can be ever found in my writing.
And if you also want some serious argument about that...Ever since human kind has a memory of itself ‒ the written chronicles of that is something that we are taught in school and is called History ‒ all the people that did a little something to make the world around them a bit better were dreamers. And most of them proud of it too...But when I hear the word «romantic» and I have to pick a person from the entire History that was characterized mainly by this trait I’m afraid that no one else comes to my mind except...Don Quixote! That is the literary invention of Don Miguel De Cervantes Y Saavedra but, even in that context, somebody who became famous for ‒ and also synonymous to...- fighting with windmills.
Now windmills are lovely old buildings which are very nice to look at, they haven’t ever done anything bad to me and as far as I know not to anybody else too and...Cervantes’s own life was much more interesting than that of the hero he created! Not to mention that the pathetic as fuck…wannabe knight is in love with a woman who not only doesn’t know anything about his feelings but she doesn’t even bother to make an appearance throughout the whole book! This is not unrequited love, this is pure laughing stock...Like the whole book could very well be a comedy, so much for that eternal symbol of knighthood, romanticism and...relentless self delusion too!
On the other hand Goethe, after he wrote in «The Sorrows Of Young Werther» what can really be considered as the Bible of romanticism, ended his life saying «light! More light!», even at his last minute he was trying to take a final glimpse of reality. And I think that this says a lot...No hard feelings and even more no insult to anybody, just wanted to make clear where I stand on this issue guys and gals!)

Just me but with all the ego left at the door...

moondance makes you very cryptic...

Cervantes the beginning of the modern novel first attempt to leave tragedy behind.

Actually not an attempt. He succeeded.

very erotic some of your music description.

Good enjoy it to the full.

It's my turn to say that you chose an interesting word here: Erotic for my description of a song? I just used some typical terminology together with some words that add some color as for it to be more easily understood by those who are not familiar with that terminology. But then again...Apollo: God of the sun, the healing and the healers, the divination, the Muses and the fine/expressive arts and most of all of course music and...yes, love. Maybe not as much Venus of course but the closest to that one of the six male gods could be. Here you go then, food for thought!
