We Have The Coolest Birds In The World

Yes, that’s right. The coolest birds in the world are found in the Americas. I know, I know. Europeans, Asians, Africans and Aussies have some pretty cool looking indigenous birdies, but none of em have a bird that can fly backwards, fly upside down, fly sideways, fly while spinning around, and hover in mid-air.

Yet, if you live between Alaska and Chile you can watch hummingbirds right up close in your yard.

In 2015 I have been enjoying this seasons friend, Boris. He claimed my feeder in the early Spring, and has guarded it well against all comers with the help of his trusty girlfriend Natasha. Their aerial exploits have entertained me for many months.

Do you like to watch your local birds?

I didn't know hummingbirds were Russian!

Just a couple minutes ago the hummingbird that frequents my feeder buzzed me to refill it!

It's not that they're Russian. Rather, it's the stuff that they can do can only be reproduced in cartoons!

It's getting close to migration time for the ones here in Nawth Carolina. I'm not sure I will need to fill my feeder until February.

We do have some beautiful birds here. I've always loved watching hummingbirds, but only on tv. We don't have them here.

If you ever get the time and the gumption, watch a youtube video of them flying in slow motion. They are some of the more superior athletes in the animal kingdom.

Their shoulders are so strong and flexible - each one can do figure eights! They are birdie ballerinas, watch them dance!

I have a long story about some local birds, but I'll try to keep it short.
Purple Martins.
Not far away, the Platte River get's plenty of attention for being a stop for Canadian Geese. (It's awesome if you're into that, I'm sure.)
But just about a half mile from my house is an official roosting place for purple martins.
They peak in flocks of 20-30,000 and perform amazing sunset aerobatics before roosting along a registered two block stretch of Ash trees.
(It's a yearly thing.)
Like the geese, they are migrating south.
It's a wonderful sight to behold.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

We have a few hummingbirds in our area. Living on the migration path affords me some fantastic bird watching opportunities. A neighbor set up a camera by his hummingbird feeder Great shots of their acrobatic abilities!

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I am aware of the Purple Martin phenomenon. I saw it on tv last year. Geese are alright, I guess. Goose shit is pretty nasty though.

Keep yer camera close, and take us some pics! Oh, wait. You need no prodding in that department, right?

At least in Norway, we have tits. Great tits, blue tits, marsh tits, crested tits and coal tits.
And the colourful puffins.

Not only great tits come out of Norway. No. Great sentences originate there as well.

I love puns with purpose! Thank you, for this clever comment.

We are so lucky!

Say, we need a neighborhood turtle, too. I wonder where yours is?
