I got to witness the eclipse for within a couple of miles of where it's duration was longest in southern IL. Seeing it live exceeded all the build up. I've followed astronomy since I was a . This was a vision and moment that I'll take with me to the grave.

I was thinking on the, long, drive home about how I'd be able to describe what I saw. Words fail it. It was awesome in the original sense of that word. It inspired awe. Everyone around me gasped when totality became complete. I'll describe it differently on the F place. Here, I'll say it was like an orgasm. A slow steady build from first contact, when the moon takes an initial tiny bite out of the sun. The affect becoming more pronounced at more and more of the sun is hidden, the landscape dimming, color shifting, temperature dropping. Then finally the crescent sun shrinks and narrows and....vanishes....OMG. It was like the whole crowd had cum. 90 minutes of foreplay will do that to you.

Another eclipse passes this very same locale in April of 2024. I'm planning on being there.

We barley got the reported 58% but it got really windy when the darkest time arrived and then perfectly still. All the dogs in the neighborhood were silent- like a spooky movie

You were so fortunate to see the eclipse in its totally, and even better with a crowd of people. What a great description.

I'm jealous.

It was well worth the three hours we spent in traffic getting the 40 miles back to our camper.
