Maybe I Should Hang Up The Sword and Armor ?

I spent the evening hanging out with my friend and coworker who is running the karaoke for a struggling bar.

I can do bars, but generally they kind of bore me. I prefer to drink at home in the company of my buddies then out in public in front of strangers.

So i'm sitting there doing my best not to fall asleep when i notice two women sitting at the other table. One is Blondie in her early 50s , average figure, the other is in her mid 20s, very overweight, but has the prettiest red hair.

So i'm watching them out of the corner of my eye and i see some drunken cowboy approach the older lady. He chats with her for a while and they go dance. Next song , they're still dancing. The younger woman is now looking bored and annoyed.

I notice she finishes her beer and i tell the waitress to bring her another one and put it on my tab. She receives the beer smiles and says thank you and then turns her back to me.

I shrug to myself and think "oh well".

A few minutes later her friend and drunk cowboy return and she wanders over and says "thank you for the beer, my mother-in-law and i rarely get out, and now she can't shake this drunk idiot"

As i'm pondering the implications of mother-in-law i find myself replying "no problem, i do knight-in-shining-armor quite well"

So i go over there take a seat and position myself between mother-in-law and drunk cowboy. I'm doing my best to give drunk cowboy subtle "go away" signals, but he's not noticing.

Finally i motion to him to come near me and i whisper in his ear "hey man, she's not interested, and to be honest, you're making her uncomfortable". He says "and who the hell are you ?". I say "i'm the guy giving you friendly advice before the situation becomes unfriendly". To drive the point home, i stand up, i'm about 20 years younger then this guy and have about 50 pounds and 4 inches of height on him. He gets all friendly "Hey man, i'm not wanting any trouble, i was just wanting to hang out with this beautiful woman is there anything wrong with that ?"

I reply "actually there is, cause she wants you to leave her alone"
Drunk cowboy finally gets the hint and leaves in search of a new victim.

Figuring i did my job,and neither of them really want male company, i get up to leave. The younger redhead says "stay please, you seem like a nice guy, and we don't want to have to fight off all these drunks all night"

So i stay, i've had several crown-on-the-rocks so i switch to just coke. We sit and chat for a while, it's pleasant and fun. Some big bruiser comes over and starts hitting on the redhead in a most obnoxious manner. I look at him and say "listen buddy, i know she's cute, but i'd really prefer it if you not hit on my wife"
Bruiser apologizes and leaves. My friend is looking at me like i'm crazy now, i can see him staring at me from his DJ both and just shaking his head at me. The night continues, we have small talk, i run off a few other guys. Finally the women get up to leave and thank me for protecting them. I wish them well and watch them leave.

I then look around the bar and notice that every single woman in the place is attached to another man already.

Just fucking lovely!

So i sit there drinking cokes until my buddy wraps up his session and i help him load his equipment and then head home.

I guess this just goes to reinforce Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #285 - No Good deed goes unpunished.

That was a very nice thing you did, don't ever loose your ability to play the knight in shinning armor, there are many women in this world who miss it terribly.

It's one of the reason's that we don't put ourselves out there much anymore. Keep it, it looks good on you.

I wish that there were more men like you in the world.
It would be a better place, instead.

Well i feel more like a sucker then a good man. i know i did the right thing, the honorable thing, the chivalrous thing. But i still feel like a tool who just got used. As much as it annoys me, i'd do it again. That is my nature. But by gawd, i'm gonna whine about it!

i was at the bar to help my friend out and looking to get laid , and instead i sacrificed my own goal to thwart my fellow males in persuit of their goals. I think those ladies could have handled themselves. Women have been turning down men since the human race began. It's part of our mating process.

As soon as i heard the word mother-in-law i knew there was no hope for loving coming from that table tonight

yet i sat there and risked running across some idiot who might decide my appearance and demeaneor wasn't threatening enough. At the very least i wasted away all my chances that evening

that's the problem in fighting dragons to rescue fair maidens, some dragons aren't such pushovers, and some maidens refuse to give their heart as the prize
