the scorpions... no, not the little pinchy, bitey, stabby poisonous ones with the tail but the peculiarly popular, past it pop/rock stars (who only poison the airwaves) popular with eastern european mullet fanciers... and greeks. I just dont get it. can someone please explain to me why this band is so bloody popular here??? i'm sure im about to offend at least half the greeks on this site right now(which is kind of the issue), but, come on... whats going on. did noone notice the 90's or even the noughties??? ive lived here for near on 6 years and ive been invited to see the scorpions soooo many times its actually really awkward to refuse now. see, the thing is, here, theyre "GODS of ROCK" whereas where i come from theyre a punchline to a bad joke. we tell a joke about bad music and one hit wonders and someone will always finish it off with some whistling of the mighty "wind of change" and we all laugh really hard. for us theyre right up there with effi dodi, the birdy song and anything from eurovision (thats another thing i just dont get, do only the people from the islands just off to the left of france get that eurovision is also a joke?) see, noone seems to have worked out that the reason theyre free to play in greece so often is because in any other country they cant even pack out a pub! on the scale of the ridiculous they(the scorps) are on a parallel with, if youll please envision with me, the latest production of hamlet, perhaps directed by kenneth brannagh and starring Russell crow announcing theyve cast kalomoira to sing the part of ophelia! (come to think of it, thats not silly enough, make it Iago instead and get some shoe polish on her face) so, come on then my hellenic chums, please, give me a clue as to why, of all the great music produced in the last 50 years you lot seem to have only opened your arms to dodgy 80's eastern european rock??? failing that, someone please send me a lindisfarne t-shirt with shoulder pads, some neon socks and a crate of babycham. |
